Edmonton Muslims Host Annual Dinner in the Inner City

October 24th 2007

The Edmonton Muslim community will be hosting a dinner at the Boyle Street Centre on Sunday, October 28, 2007.  The dinner will be held at 10116 – 105 Avenue from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

This is the sixth annual dinner the Muslim community has hosted at the Boyle Street Community Centre sponsored by the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities and by Islamic Family and Social  Services Association.  In 2006, approximately 900 people enjoyed a family style dinner at this event.

The decision to initiate this annual dinner event came from individual members of the Edmonton Muslim community who were looking for more ways to contribute to the community at large during the holy month of Ramadan.   Muslims have just recently marked the end of the holy month of Ramadan and celebrated the Muslim holiday of “Eid-Ul-Fitr”.  During the month of Ramadan, observant Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and material indulgences during daylight hours and increase their charitable contributions.  This month of fasting strengthens the individual’s character and increases their awareness of those in need.

“We are very pleased to share our joyous celebration with the Boyle Street community and to be able to help ensure that one of our city’s least fortunate communities is given an opportunity to enjoy a family style meal” said Nazia Islam executive director of the Islamic Family and Social Services Association.

“We are grateful that the Boyle Street Coop has been so open to having us host this annual event which helps to extend feelings of goodwill, community and charity during this special season” said Larry Shaben, Chairman of the ECMC.

In addition to hosting the Boyle Street Dinner, Edmonton Muslim Community will also be making donations, of both, food and cash, to the Edmonton Food Bank to help in its continuing effort to help feed the needy on a daily basis. Presentations will be made at the Edmonton Islamic Academy on Wednesday October 24, 2007 and on Sunday at the Boyle Street Dinner
