ECMC Expresses Concern Over Flotilla Raid

June 2, 2010

The Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities (ECMC) wishes to register its deep concern over the recent Israeli attack in international waters on a humanitarian flotilla bound for the besieged Gaza Strip. According to the latest media news, 14 people are dead and several dozen wounded or missing as a result of this action. There appears to have been little regard for the fact that the flotilla has included citizens of many nations, including Canada and the US. We appeal to the Government of Canada to take a serious note of this recent incident and to ensure the safety of all Canadian citizens impacted by this action.

The ECMC believes that the siege of Gaza and the ensuing attack on the humanitarian relief flotilla goes against the Canadian values of justice and compassion. We, therefore, appeal to the Government to support the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations in meeting the emergency needs of the besieged Gaza population.

The ECMC is an Edmonton-based coalition of ten organizations, with a mission to “strive to speak and act on behalf of Edmonton Muslims with fellow Canadians in a manner that protects, promotes and enhances the understanding of Islam and Muslims in matters of public policy, education, peace and safety”.
