Celebrating Our Faiths
Understanding Contemporary Islam: The Legacy of the Late Dr. Ibrahim Abu-Rabi

October 24th, 2011

Celebrating our Faiths is an on-going joint venture of the City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Interfaith Centre for Education and Action. The program’s aim is to create an opportunity for the citizens of Edmonton to learn about various faith communities and their traditions, thereby enhancing the understanding and awareness of the rich diversity that exists in Edmonton.

This year’s program entitled ”Understanding Contemporary Islam: The Legacy of  Late Dr. Abu-Rabi,” is co-hosted by the Edmonton Interfaith Centre and Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities (ECMC)  ECMC is an umbrella organization representing nine different Muslim entities in Edmonton with the mission to “strive to speak on behalf of Muslims with fellow Canadians, in a manner that protects, promotes, and enhances the understanding of Islam and Muslims in matters of public policy, education, peace and safety.” Education and dialogue is a key tool in fulfilling this mission.  As such, ECMC established the fully endowed ECMC Chair of Islamic Studies at the University of Alberta, the first of its kind in Canada.  Dr. Ibrahim Abu-Rabi acted as the first chair.

Dr. Abu-Rabi extensively researched modern Islamic thought in various countries across the globe. In 2008 he came to Edmonton and the University of Alberta. In his position as the Chair of Islamic Studies, he continued to do outstanding research while engaging his students with insight and warmth as a Professor who got to know them at a personal level.

Dr. Abu-Rabi aimed to encourage dialogue amongst people of all faiths and to encourage a deeper understanding not only amongst Muslims but amongst all citizens. His special interest was Christian-Muslim dialogue. He was a man of vision who not only understood but embraced the pluralism that exists within Islam and all other major religions of the world. Sadly, he passed away on July 2, 2011 while travelling abroad. His many work of achievement will be on display at City Hall from October 24, 2011 until November 18, 2011.

Members of the media and community are invited to the official launch of the exhibition to be held on Monday October 24, 2011 at 12:00PM in the Foyer of City Hall.
