Muslim Communities' Donation Collection for Southern Alberta Flood Relief

July 18, 2013

On the occasion of the Premier’s Breakfast that commences Edmonton’s annual Klondike Days Celebrations, we are reminded of the fact that this occasion is as much about celebration as it is about community-building. This year, this spirit of community-building has assumed a new meaning for many of us in the wake of the devastating floods in southern Alberta.

The recently begun Islamic Month of Ramadan is a sacred month in the Islamic Calendar, which is commonly known as the month of fasting. However, in its essence, it is a month not only of fasting and worship but also of community-building, caring and sharing. Indeed the festival that marks the culmination of the month known as "Eid-ul-Fitr" translates as "The Festival of Charity".

It is in this spirit of caring and sharing that several mosques and communities have come together in this early part of Ramadan to help collect the donation of $52,000 being presented today through the Canadian Red Cross under the aegis of the ECMC. This, however, is only the start of the activities which will be ongoing for the rest of the month of Ramadan, ending on August 8. As part of this effort, we hope to continue this work to raise awareness for assistance towards southern Alberta as well as the local Edmonton Food Bank.

At this time, our sincere prayers are certainly with our affected Provincial neighbours this Ramadan.
The organizations and communities which have graciously participated in this collective efforts to-date are list on the following page.
