Edmonton Muslims Commemorate Prophet's Birthday

February 6, 2014

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born on 12th day of Rabi-al- Awal,  the third month of the Islamic calendar in the year 570 CE. To mark this occasion Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities (ECMC) and His Highness Prince Aga Khan Shia Imami Ismaili Council for Edmonton will hold a special commemoration on Saturday February 8th at the Royal Alberta Museum located at 12845-102nd Avenue. The event will include a talk by Imam Dr. Usama Al Atar.

Dr. Usama Al-Atar holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, and completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta. He's got several publications in the fields of diabetes, cancer, kidney stones and solar energy. His research has been highlighted by Science News, C&N News, and by the BBC. He is currently completing another Ph.D. in Islamic theology at the University of Exeter, in the UK.. He will be speaking on:
“Prophet Muhammad's Life: His Contribution to Modern Civilization”

The Holy Qur’an gives primacy to man’s intellect and this is attested to in the very first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) where Allah says:
“Read in the name of your Lord who created -created man from a clot.  Read: for your Lord is Most Bountiful, who teaches by the pen, teaches man that which he knew not.” (Quran 96:1-5)

Islam has provided the foundation for the knowledge, reflection and contemplation that has enabled the creation of this deep-rooted civilization that was a crucial link by which the West arrived at the gates of modern knowledge, as acknowledged by many world renowned historians.

Therefore as we commemorate Prophet’s birthday, it is fitting that we reflect on his advice about knowledge-“One who treads a path in search of knowledge has his path to Paradise made easy by God…” As Canadians we are proud and thankful to be living in a country which not only values education and is a leader in many areas of technology and research but is a land of opportunities for all who wish to excel.
